FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS…

Q. Can’t I just share my grief with a friend/family member instead?

A. You can, however often they may not have the capacity to support you. They may find it hard to be neutral and listen without interrupting or giving advice. A counsellor is objective. They can normalise your experiences and feelings, show empathy, and focus solely on you and your needs and not their own.

Q. What qualifications do counsellors have?

A. I have a Bachelor of Counselling degree, and other certificates in areas I have specialised in. I am a Level 4 member of the Australian Counselling Association (ACA), which requires me to maintain my training, have regular supervision, hold public liability insurance and have a current police check.

Q. What experience do you have?

A. Prior to my last 5 years spent running my private practice I worked within the following organisations: Drug Arm, Life Line, Relationships Australia, The Family Relationship Advice Line, The Gambling Help Service, and StandBy Support After Suicide. I gained many additional skills in each of these roles.

Q. Do I need a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from my doctor?

A. Currently counsellors are not eligible to provide Medicare rebates under a MHCP. This service is only available for psychologists and mental health social workers. My fees reflect the gap fee you still need to pay.

Q. What is the difference between a psychologist and a counsellor?

A. Psychologists work with a medical framework and have more training in research, diagnosis, and assessment. They generally work with clients with more severe mental health conditions. Counsellors use a person-centred approach, focusing on empathic listening and a holistic approach, and do not diagnose.

Q. Is what I share with you confidential?

A. Yes, I always practice confidentiality. The only exceptions include:

  • Case discussions with a professional supervisor.

  • If your notes are subpoenaed by a court.

  • If a child is at risk of harm

  • If you or someone you speak about is at risk.

Q. How long do counselling sessions go for?

A. Your counselling session will go for 60 minutes. If you are late to your session, this time will not be made up as this will impact other clients.

Q. Where are you located?

A. I have my office in Nimbin, NSW and will give you my address at the time of booking. If you are not in this area please enquire about telehealth options.
